The Happy Buddy will be starting PreK-4 {{gasp!!}} on Tuesday next week and I wanted to come up with a fun way to countdown to his first day.
I also wanted to get out of the rut we’ve gotten into with praying… It seems that we spend an awful LOT of time confessing sins and me praying for him to grow in obedience and kindness, but we have often missed out on the opportunity to pray for others.
So in an effort to combine the countdown and our desire to pray beyond ourselves, we came up with this Back to School Countdown Prayer Chain.
We gathered up several sheets of colored construction paper and cut out a school bus (like our countdown last year), as well as several fat strips.
We talked about all of the people at his school who work so hard to make his learning environment a wonderful, Christ-centered, nurturing place. Then we wrote out their names on each of the strips of paper – his new teacher, his old teacher, the PE teacher, the head of school, the preschool director, some of his classmates, etc.
We stapled the strips together and pull off a new one every night before bed.
We have been doing our prayer chain for the last 4 nights and let me just tell you how much I LOVE IT!
I love seeing the Happy Buddy get excited about praying for these super special people.
I love that he is learning the importance of lifting up another person in prayer.
And I love that he has a cute visual of how much more time we have left until his first day (so I don’t go nuts answering that question 3,456,782 times).
Happy Back to School Countdown Prayer Chain-ing! 🙂

That is the best idea I have heard in a LONG time. How about using that idea for family and friends. I would LOVE to be on the list !

Great post – so wonderful to get children (and ourselves!) to think of others! I also love your bulletin board. did you make it? I searched quickly, but didn’t see a post. Thanks!

Hey Jennifer! I never did a whole post for that bulletin board, just mentioned it in the post I did about the Happy Buddy’s big boy room – HERE.
Someone gave us the old frame (which was gold). We spray painted it red. Then I took the thing to Home Depot, walked in the door, and a super helpful employee cut the cork board and put a backing on it for me all right there in the store. It was amazing! You could probably find a chunky old frame at a thrift store or something if you want to make one too!

Printed 3 different pictures for my grandkids to add the prayer chain to. Will have them complete and begin their ‘prayer down’ to school. Thank you so much for your precious ideas!
