The Boohoo Breakfast is just the thing you need to say goodbye to summer and hello to the exciting new routines of busy school life! It’s called the Boohoo Breakfast because everyone gets to Boohoo that summer is over. The loss of running freely through sprinklers and all-day adventures in the swimming pool is definitely worthy of some tears! But turning something un-fun into a celebration is a magical way to help young ones transition and get geared up for a new season.
How do I throw a Boohoo Breakfast?
At least one week before the big first day, tell your family that you will be doing a trial run of getting ready for school. Everyone will practice waking up early, performing morning responsibilities like brushing teeth, putting on clothes/school uniforms, getting book bags and lunch pails together, etc., but then instead of hopping in the car to go to school, sit down as a family for your Boohoo Breakfast! While dining on scrumptious fare, go around the table and have each member in the family share one thing about the summer that they are really sad to say goodbye to. For example, “I am so sad that summer’s ending and I won’t get to live in my pajamas every day until noon!!” After each person has shared, they must then showcase their Oscar Award winning Boohoo-ing abilities by faking the biggest tear-fest ever. This means obnoxiously noisy nose-blowings, loud sobs, and ear-splitting cries of misery (Note: You may want to inform the neighbors of your plans… 🙂 Heck, invite them along! Call up other families and Boohoo together!).
Hosting a Boohoo breakfast is just what you need to get your family back on a schedule, have some closure about the summer, and laughing their heads off at the magic of it all!
What should I serve at a Boohoo Breakfast?
Boohoo Breakfasts need to be a cut above the average! Cook something that will smell so good even the most reluctant risers will be enticed out of bed. Think it can’t be done?? Here’s a secret weapon: Monkey Bread! NO ONE can sleep through these aromas! Here’s a mouth-watering/nostril-pleasing recipe from an amazing mom in my church named Lucy…
Ingredients: 1 cup sugar; 2 T cinnamon; 4 cans Pillsbury Country Style Biscuits (10 per tube); ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans; ¼ cup dark raisins; 2/3 cup butter; 1 cup brown sugar
Directions: Mix sugar with 1 T cinnamon in a bowl. Open 2 tubes of rolls, separate and cut each biscuit into quarters. Toss these pieces in the bowl with the cinnamon sugar so that they are evenly coated. Place biscuit pieces in the bottom of a greased Bundt pan. Sprinkle with chopped nuts and raisins. Melt butter and add it to the brown sugar and 1 T cinnamon. Pour half of this mixture over the first layer of rolls. Repeat same procedure with the rest of the biscuits, omitting the nuts and raisins. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes. Serve warm.
