Happy Father’s Day, Dad One of my favorite most recent stories about you… We were sitting in your office at the church chatting about all the things. You said that you could never retire. I asked why?? Retirement sounds lovely! You said that when you couldn’t play the organ or direct the choir for a few Sundays while you healed from your recent knee surgery, you sat at home, watching the services online, feeling so discontent. We are getting ready to go on our annual beach trip and I’m just sitting in front of the washing machine trying to figure out how to pack up 5 people. My suitcase is always the biggest and I don’t even wear 90% of what I pack, but if I wake up in a mood for overalls, I better have them available. ♀️ I also have to make sure the house is cleaned from top to bottom before we leave because there’s nothing worse than coming home to a giant mess. One of the sweetest gifts of motherhood has been seeing how God uses our boys’ names to instruct my heart and point me to Him each day. Noah means “peace” and “rest”. For 5 years we asked God to open my womb. Noah’s birth brought rest to a season of great longing. Noah’s name is also God’s gracious reminder to me of His best when I struggle with fear or anxiety. Jethro means “abundance”. Jethro’s birth ushered in another season of hardship as he faced health challenge after health challenge. How to be the best mom to your grown daughter... Be happy to hear from your daughter whenever she calls. Bring your daughter a roll of toilet paper and/or paper towels whenever you visit her. Let your daughter text you a link to the new dress she liked from @roolee and then text her back a photo of the order number. Show up to clean fan blades and scrub patio floors whenever your daughter complains about not having enough time to do it herself. I don’t typically overflow with parenting advice other than HUMILITY and REMAIN ON YOUR KNEES. But one thing I have found to be particularly helpful when raising our boys and working with preschoolers is what I like to call “The Circle Back.” ✨ Kids often express their anxiety, frustration or anger in big feelings or “tantrums.” There is no point in lecturing, preaching sermons, or reasoning with them when they are in this emotional place. ✨ The best we can do FIRST is help them calm down somehow.
