Recipe – Aunt Greta’s Brownies, Book Review and GIVEAWAY!

book-review-recipe-and-giveawayWe love love loooove the If You Give Books by Laura Numeroff!

When Harper Collins asked me to review Laura Numeroff’s latest book in the series, I immediately said yes.  I was especially excited because the title of the new book is If You Give a Mouse a Brownie.

The people in my house love brownies!

For that reason alone, I knew this book would be a winner.

And it was!

Here’s what Harper Collins has to say about Laura’s new book…

You’ve given a mouse a cookie, but what happens if you give a Mouse a brownie? Mouse is back in this delicious new story in the #1 New York Times bestselling If You Give series, which has sold over 14 million copies, from author and illustrator duo Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. This book is also the first one to feature Mouse in 14 years.  With its spare, rhythmic text and circular tale, If You Give a Mouse a Brownie is perfect for beginning readers and story time.

if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-3if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-1if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-2

if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-7If You Give a Mouse a Brownie begins with the obvious – a mouse and a tasty looking brownie.  Then the mouse wants ice cream to go with his brownie.  Which then leads him to want a spoon which then turns into a drumstick which then turns into a rock concert… and so on!

My boys laughed out loud as the mouse rolled from one zany adventure to the next and then circled back around to end with his ice cream and brownie again.

By the time the story was over, my boys were ready for some brownies of their own.

So we decided to make some!

My Aunt Greta’s Brownies are pretty famous in our family.  My mom used to make them all the time when we were growing up – my older brother couldn’t get enough of them!if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-4if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-5if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-6

if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-12if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-9if-you-give-a-mouse-a-brownie-10Aunt Greta’s Brownies are very easy to make and they turn out so dense, cakey, and chocolatey!

Just the way my boys like it!

The only problem was that we didn’t have any ice cream to go with our brownies! 😉

I have a HUGE weakness for books! So anyway to fund that is helpful. Also, my son and I have hosted summer breakfast parties over the years based on these books (If you give a pig…,If you give a moose…If you give a dog…) and THEN we wrote our own! If you give a whale a waffle. They should actually publish it. It turned out amazing and everyone loved it! Such great memories with these books. Thanks for sharing this one! I passed it up in Costco, if I don’t win, I’ll have to go back to get it. =)

My four kids love this series of books and I would love to share them with my preschool class. We would to share the joy of cooking with them and this series is a great partner to do that with.

Wow…thanks Laura and Julie (Happy Home Fairy) for this special opportunity. My boys love reading, and it would be awesome to add to their book collection, especially when it has to do with one of our favorite activities…baking!!! This would make magical memories for our special Mommy and Sons reading/activity time together.

Thank you so much for giving me yet another reason to love your website! I run a licensed group/family daycare and I use your posts to help teach my employees how to organize our preschool and then get an idea of what to expect of our little ones. The Lord is a blessing me and many children thru you! Today we started the Bible curriculum using the children’s Bible; we use ideas from the Kindness Antenna to bless the neighbors. Since hiding Easter eggs for the boy next door, he and the daycare children go back and forth doing kind things for each
other. I am so excited to read about Mouse and bake brownies with our children!! You are wonderful. Thank you again!!!

  • We are celebrating that because of the cross we have the unwavering favor of God. Because of the cross we are pursued daily by God’s perfect love, we are offered forgiveness and freedom, and we are equipped with the hope of the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Jesus!

  • Things I’ve learned from breaking my tailbone >>

1. It is possible to wear only 4 outfits in 2 weeks.

2. God is more concerned with developing character and deep roots than about our physical comfort.

3. My children don’t love to see me bedridden, but they love that they have been able to eat nuggets, pizza, and fries for 2 weeks.

4. When you can’t sleep because of pain or wild imagination that is not helpful, put on worship music.

5. A good prayer to pray, “Show me the depth of my need for You and shatter my self-sufficiency. Change my mindset so that prayer becomes my first response in every situation. May I seek You in all things. Help me to put all my hope in You...”

6. Hold on to a sense of humor. Or find someone to get you laughing. Even though it will hurt to laugh. You need to not take it all so seriously!

7. God’s people are so precious. People showed up on our doorstep with lasagnas, flowers, sandwiches, Uber Eats gift cards, and one dear soul even sent her cleaning ladies to our house to undo the damage of mama being down for days on end. Whenever I was tempted to despair, someone would text or bring by some freshly cut fruit. The message here is don’t ask, just do > because every act of kindness reminded me of Who is in charge.

8. When hard times come, lean into gratitude instead of fussiness and resistance. Thank your husband for carrying everything while you’re down, thank your community for carrying you to Jesus, thank the Lord for being present in all circumstances with a plan for your good and His glory. There is a reason God tells us in the Bible to do all things without complaining or disputing-so that you. will. shine. It’s not easy, but the reward is GREAT. I want the world to see Jesus shining in me in my adversity. Doesn’t mean you can’t cry and admit that what you are facing is so very difficult, but this can be done with a surrendered heart. This is the new assignment. Accept it, receive it as something that is from a loving Father. Look for the provisions along the way. You will go from strength to strength. Move forward with hope. He’s got you!

✨When we wake up, it will be Christmas!✨

I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to bake a cake for a family very dear to us. I went to the store, bought the ingredients, and carefully followed the recipe. The recipe said multiple times not to overcook the cake because it will very easily become dry. So I watched the oven diligently. But when I pulled the cake out, I could tell it had baked a little too long.

God called me to bake this cake for this family. It wasn’t time to quit, but it wasn’t time to make another cake! So instead of getting discouraged, I chose to pray about it. I asked the Lord to take my offering and make much of it. If He can multiply the loaves and fish, He can moisten up a cake!

Precisely one day after delivering the cake, we received a text stating what I thought was impossible. The cake was good! Delicious even!

Seems silly to pray about an overcooked cake, but I believe God is honored in these small acts of faith. Believing in the impossible was something God asked Mary to do, so why not trust Him to do the impossible here, too?

What impossible thing can we bring to Him in prayer today? He loves to hear from us. He loves to delight and surprise us when we choose to believe He is good and powerful and kind. He is no magic genie, but I think when our desires align with His heart, when obedience is the priority, and we are fully surrendered come what may, we can trust He will do a good thing.

“For nothing is impossible with God!” Luke 1:37

“He satisfies the hungry with good things.” Luke 1:53

Sleep tight, friends!
