Last night the Happy Hubby and I got to go out on a little date (yay for Grammie and Pop-Pop!).
As we were heading out, I asked my man if he might be willing to risk utter humiliation for the sake of the blog.
After hearing my idea, and being the good sport that he is, he said no way. 🙂
One of the things on the agenda to discuss on our date was our finances (this is real-life, my friends), so my idea did not exactly coincide with the bleakness that is the current state of our bank account.
But as we drove away from the house, we modified the idea a bit and he eventually agreed, so we took a detour to the Dollar Tree.
The mission?
We were going to put together Easter baskets for each other at the dollar store. And because we didn’t want to be there all night, we decided that just 5 items would be good.
We also decided that in light of our financial status, we’d skip the actual buying of the Easter baskets and just exchange them in the store before putting everything back.
After all, it’s really the thought that counts, right???
As soon as we were in the store we took off – first to find baskets.
We met at the back of the store after about 10 minutes to exchange our baskets.
First up was me!
I had picked out a camouflage Easter bucket for my tough guy (who is even more of a man, in my opinion, for standing in the back of a Dollar Tree with an Easter basket in hand).
Here’s what I picked out for him…
A Pizza slicer because the Happy Hubby could seriously eat pizza every night of the week.
Hi-Liters because he is always studying and needs them to mark important notes in his books.
The second love of his life – chocolate.
A funny Sumo-man Stress Ball to help him cope with the crazy hours he has been keeping at work recently.
And pain medicine to relieve the headache he probably had from spending so much time in a Dollar Tree! 🙂
I have to say. The Happy Hubby NAILED my basket.
I almost cried when he showed me the things he gathered in my honor!
Easter Pencils because he knows how excited I was about this FREE Printable I made for y’all!
A Disney Princess Candy Egg for indulging after the Happy Buddies are in bed.
Glitter Glue because he knows my motto is, “When in doubt, just add glitter!”
A Minnie Mouse Coloring Paint Set because I love anything that has to do with Walt.
And the best item?
That Bible.
The Happy Hubby said he chose the Bible because he knows I love to read it!
That was the one that brought the tears – I am so happy that he sees me in that way and not the fearful, fretting woman I am trying to surrender.
God’s sweet grace, I tell yah!
When we were finished the exchange we raced to put our things back.
As I returned the Peanut Butter Cups, something caught my eye.
Something that I should have put in the Happy Hubby’s basket to help ease the burden of the conversation we were about to have over a giftcard-paid dinner.
Thanks, Big Hunny, for putting your manhood on the line for some Happy Home Fairy antics!
Happy Easter Basket Date Night-ing! 🙂

You two are too cute! I was just on the Dollar Tree website, before I received your e-mail, looking for economical Easter basket ideas for my kiddos for the very same reason (low funds). See anything for the kids while you were there? I loved giving your printable along with a DT Easter pencil to our Sunday school and Wednesday night children’s ministry kids, and they enjoyed receiving the fun surprise! I saw, too, that our local Christian bookstore has the Veggie Tales An Easter Carol on sale for $5, so I’m thinking a trip there might be in order, too. 🙂

What an adorable idea! You are a terrific couple who have very lucky Little Buddies. Have a wonderful HAPPY EASTER! PS: IF I bought a ticket and then won the mega lottery, I’d share so you could actually buy things at the Dollar Tree! Hugs,Frances Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2013 19:11:30 +0000 To: [email protected]

Hahaha– I look utterly despondent in that first pic of me. I wasn’t so much emasculated as I was MORTIFIED at the suspicious looks & questions you with your camera and I with my ridiculously-glittery basket were getting from the staff. But as relieved as I was to finally get out of there, I laughed all the way through your post about it today. And I’m so grateful the Lord gave you to me for this very purpose– to round out my rough edges and shape me constantly (by your zest for life) increasingly into the likeness of our Savior. I would never in a million years desire to do something like this, which is why the Lord knows I need you in my life. So, you drive me crazy… but you’re the best part of me. =)
Love,
The Happy Hubby
