A few weeks ago I signed myself and my boys up for our church’s annual Talent Show.
We decided to sing our favorite bedtime tune – “The Pajama Song” by Teatime With Tayla. You can view it on YouTube HERE. Be forewarned – it’s not the best song to actually sing right before bed as it might get your kids so hyped up it will take 9 hours and possibly some Benadryl to get them to calm down.
(I hope y’all know I am totally kidding about the Benadryl thing. Lol.)
As the Talent Show approached, however, I started having second thoughts.
I mean, who was I kidding? My kids RARELY do what I want them to do. In fact, I began having visions of full blown tantrums center stage. Not exactly the kind of talent I want them showing off, yah know? But they were offering a Chick-fil-a dinner before the event, so I figured that was a point in our favor.
I was also doubting that it was a good idea for me to get up there and dance around in fairy wings because I am 32 now and all the mature moms I know lead beautiful, quiet lives without mismatched knee socks and overabundance of glitter.
In the end, though, we went for it.
And I’m so glad we did because it was SO. FUN.
The only setback was that Happy Baby got stage fright the second we stepped out in front of the crowd and he needed me to hold him through our entire performance.
I may be 32, but I danced and sang my way through a 3 minute song with a 30 lb. child on my hip and I did not fall over dead from exhaustion.
If that’s not talent, I don’t know what is.

OK… hilarious! I am glad I didn’t know this song when my kids were younger, because we’d totally have had a dance party before bed, and then wondered why the kids wouldn’t calm down!!!
Also, I’m with you…. I’m 42 and I do cray cray things with my littles. They’re 7 and 8. Last week when I got out of work on Sunday, they picked me up with hubby. We walked down the street to get ice cream (before dinner!) and they wanted us to skip with them. Both hubby and I did. We live in a TINY town, and people were honking at us. Who cares! The kids will know we loved them, right?!
And also, you reminded me of the time I was singing in our Church’s Praise Team, and my sister’s little one was baptized that day. My littlest was 3 at the time, and she was feeling left out, I guess. She got loose from her Grammy and came up on stage with me. So I had her on my hip while doing a solo. In the end, I was glad she was with me, because it steadied my nerves and kept me from seeing my cousin (who sings on Broadway!) in the crowd. I wouldn’t have been able to do it, had I seen her!
Anyway, I read but rarely comment, but often pray for you and your family. Have a blessed day! Thanks for making me giggle this morning!

These stories are inspiring because I have a tendency to be too serious, but WANT to be more like this with my child!

I love it- that is so awesome that you can have fun with your kids! At my church we sometimes do a variety-type show for the kids and I love acting in them (no singing- no one wants to hear that!) We do lots of wacky things and one time we had a such a blast- my character had a cake fight with another. We both are pretty good-natured and like to ham it up for the kids so we smashed cake in each others hair, faces, etc- we were covered. That was seriously the most fun I had in a while and the kids thought it was so funny.

Danielle, what fun!! I have no doubt that the kids LOVED your performance!!!

How fun! My husband sang with our daughter at her home school talent show. She dressed up like Anna, and they sang “Love is an Open Door” from Frozen. It was so cute, and she loved it so much! It made her feel so special. I’m sure your boys love that their mommy is willing to do fun and silly things with them. Thanks for sharing with us!

Yep, this sealed it. We should definitely be friends. I think we might lead somewhat parallel lives.
