When a woman has a baby, baby showers or ‘sprinkles’ and well-wishers give everything imaginable (like diapers and powder and Boudreaux’s butt paste and an endless supply of toys and blankets) to help the baby survive life on planet earth…
But what about the mommy?
I can guarantee that hiney cream is not going to be all that helpful to mama on Day 4 of no sleep and no recollection of her last shower or meal (unless you count the desperate nibble of cabbage from the head she used to help relieve her mastitis).
So to help a sister out, here is the perfect gift filled with the items a mama needs in the days following her sweet baby’s birth.#1 and #2 – Healthy on-the-go snacks to keep her energy up
#3 – Pack of Scripture Cards from Thriving Home Blog to keep her mind full of truth (#necessity)
#4 – Hand sanitizer before snuggles
#5 – Mother’s Milk tea (found at Whole Foods) to boost her supply
#6 – Dry shampoo because showers are a thing of the past
#7 – Yummy candle to create a calm ambiance in the event of a colicky baby
#8 – Lip gloss to add a little glamor to that spit-up on her shoulder!
#9 – Facial wipes when there’s no time to wash
#10 – Peppermints for fresh breath (and to encourage smooching with the new daddy – an important part of post-partum recovery)
*NOTE – A few of my readers informed me after posting this that peppermint is no bueno for nursing moms! You can read more about it HERE.*
#11 – Cozy socks because a good pair of socks can cure just about anything
Throw everything in a container (I picked up an inexpensive glass jar from WalMart) and deliver.
But, let’s be honest, sweet friends.
There is really only one thing a new mama needs in the days following her baby’s birth.
New moms are faced with a lot of ‘noise’ (ie. crying, doctor’s advice, worry, fear, discouragement, the INTERNET, etc.) that can easily drown out the Voice that will keep a mom from checking herself into the loony bin.
That is why my favorite thing in this Mommy Survival Kit is the pack of encouraging Bible verses for moms that I found over at Thriving Home Blog (pick up your own set HERE).
Dry shampoo is an amazing invention and all, but it is no match for the powerful, refreshing, life-changing Word of God.
True new mommy survival really only comes from clinging to and claiming His promises on a daily basis.
So as you prepare for the onslaught of baby shower invitations coming your way this Spring, consider making the mom-to-be something that will give her the tools she needs to make it through those first few months with her baby.
Something a little more effective than butt paste.
Happy New Mommy Survival Kit-ing! 🙂

This is the best idea! I love it! Thank you for sharing about our verse cards for moms. We pray they are a blessing to every mom who receives them. I shared your survival kit on our Facebook page and several Pinterest boards. Thanks again!

This is a great idea! The only thing that I’m going to change and suggest is no peppermints because they’re known to negatively affect breastmilk supply. 🙂 Besides that, I’m putting this in the mail within the next few days for my cousin who’s expecting twins!

Love this idea! I am just throwing in a few things of my own like bath & body hand sanitizers and a lullaby cd.
