This month my little class of 2-year-olds has been celebrating all things winter. We have done several snowman crafts, made coffee filter snowflakes, and read a bunch of snow-themed children’s literature.
I saw this Snow Dough recipe somewhere on Pinterest and fell in love because 2 INGREDIENTS.
All week I talked it up with the kids that it was going to snow in our room on Thursday and for them to get ready for our little ‘blizzard.’
Then Thursday came and I got everything set up and went to mix it together with the kids and DUH DUH DUH… My assistant pointed out that I had accidentally purchased shampoo instead of conditioner.
It’s a good thing my 2-year-olds were in a forgiving mood! We had a good laugh about how I could be a weather man because my weather predictions were completely off. 😉
I arrived the next day with conditioner in hand and had the children help me measure out 3 cups of baking soda and 1/2 cup CONDITIONER.
We mixed everything together (and added in several sprinkles of silver glitter) and let me tell you a few things –
- My room smelled like heaven.
- The kids had SNOW much fun.
So much fun, in fact, that I had to send an emergency Work Order email to our facilities department requesting a vacuum because preschoolers and snow dough.
Have fun!
– Julie 🙂

Does it matter if you use cheap generic conditioner?
Happy Home Fairy
Nope! Cheap works GREAT!
Margaret
Does it have the consistency of play dough after it’s made?
Happy Home Fairy
No! It is much softer and loose. It really feels like snow!
Toni
How long does it last? If you let I dry can kids mold it and create sculptures?
Peggy Kessler
I Love how you admitted to your ‘forecast’ conditioner mishap! I tell my student teachers working with children, animals, weather
(snow days, pouring rain on bubbles day, too hot to hike, hot Autumn/ leaves are still green…….)…… it’s science!! Mishap with supplies, use the time as an opportunity to Chart Predictions!
Happy Home Fairy
So funny! Yes, I am all about being real! 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
Megan
i am worried about them eating it!
Happy Home Fairy
I watched them very closely and we didn’t have any problems at all! 🙂
Tanya
Can they mould it into a snowman?

If you substitute Suave Ocean Breeze Conditioner it will also feel cold like snow and leave your classroom smelling flagrantly fresh!!
Happy Home Fairy
That sounds AMAZING! Thanks!!
ale
how long does it last…ppl keep asking and i dont see a clear answer.
Tina
Can you make things with this, like maybe a snowman?
How long does it last, like if you make something, does it get hard and you can save it?
Can you put it in a ziplock bag and use it again later?
Susie
Regarding questions on how long it will last. Just give it a try! Conditioner is only a dollar at Dollar tree or other discount stores and a small box of baking soda is not expensive and then share your results! Have a blessed day and enjoy the “snow”!
Helen
Do you know exactly how much this makes? I have 13 kids.
Thank you!

Based on the ingredient list, it should make 3 ½ cups. You could try just pouring out that amount of the baking soda into a large bowl without mixing in the conditioner to eyeball the volume. Then remove the extra ½ cup soda before adding in the conditioner. I’m a visual learner so I use this method a lot! 😄😆
