Today’s Apple Activity is one that will have your home smelling ridiculously Fall-licious. When I was teaching 2nd grade, every year I did an Apple Unit and every year we made homemade applesauce as a class. The kids loved it because they got to make and eat something yummy and I loved it because as it cooked the number of visitors we had to our classroom increased ten-fold! People would walk by our door and smell such heavenly goodness that they couldn’t resist poking their heads in – I LOVEd having visitors to our little classroom! Brightened up the whole day!
On another note, Noah ADORES applesauce. I mix a cup of applesauce in with his oatmeal every day and he gobbles it up in no time at all. I’m pretty sure that the homemade stuff will send him to the moon!
So, my readers, enjoy cooking up this easy breezy and delicious Fall treat and then enjoying it as a dessert tonight after dinner…
Day 4 Apple Activity AND Apple Activity at Dinner –Homemade Applesauce
Directions: Peel and core about 8 apples. If you want to involve your kids, slice the apples and allow them to cut them into chunks using plastic knives. Place the apples, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon into a crock pot or slow cooker. Cook for at least a couple of hours or until apples are mushy. Cool and serve.
While you and your kids are making the applesauce, sing this song…
“Applesauce” (Sung to the tune of “Yankee Doodle”)
Peel an apple
Cut it up
Put it in a pot.
When you do,
You will find,
It’s applesauce we’ve got!
This makes quite a bit of applesauce, so you might want to scoop some into a jar, tie it with a ribbon and bring it to your neighbor. Include a little note that says, “We think you are the most a-PEELING neighbor ever! Happy Fall!”
Apple Joke –
Q. What kind of apple has a short temper?
A. A crab apple! 🙂
