How to Help Stop Sibling Fighting

How to Help Stop Sibling FightingI am in the final stages of getting my eBook ready for all of you!  I am hoping to launch it on January 25th – woooohooooo!!!

The Kindness Antennae is my mission to inspire sweet mamas everywhere (like YOU) to live lives that celebrate kindness.

One of the chapters specifically addresses how to encourage siblings to be kind to one another.

Because often it feels like I am acting as a referee around here – breaking up squabbles between brothers about anything from what TV show to watch to who gets to hold the red ball in the bathtub.

And it seems like many of you feel this way as well!  I recently asked my Facebook fans how they encourage their kids to be kind to one another and a huge response expressed gratitude for help in the trenches!

As I have sought the Lord about this particular issue, I realized that you can try all of the tips and tricks out there to manage sibling rivalry, but really it comes down to a heart issue within each child that can only be solved by the good work of Christ!

And the very best way that I have found to inspire a child’s heart toward love and kindness (or obedience, or honesty, or purity, etc.) is to use the holy, inspired Word of God.

Teaching my boys what God says about loving one another is my top priority.

So when they are headed for the WWF arena with each other, I will gently remind them of one of the following 5 Bible verses (all of which we have worked to memorize as a family).

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love and honor one another above yourself.” Romans 12:10

Many (ok, ALL) sibling squabbles result from hearts that are bent on serving and pleasing themselves (“I want that!” or, “It’s MY turn!”).

I like to share the Bible story where God brought Abraham and Lot to a new land (Genesis 13).  When it came time to divide the land between the 2 men, Abraham graciously gave Lot first pick of the real estate.

This kind of sacrifice is rooted in a deep trust in God.

When we learn that God meets all of our needs in Christ, we learn to care less about what we think we need to be happy and delight more in making others happy.  I want this for my kids (and myself!).

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

When my boys fight, my main concern is about their forgiveness and reconciliation.  Just as with any relationship, when a lot of little things go unresolved, bitterness can take root and walls can be built between siblings.

So when they hurt one another, they must go to great lengths to make things right.  Thorough, heartfelt apologies are expected.  Forgiveness is given immediately and no one is allowed to bring it back up – it is finished.  Then we always wrap things up with some hugging.

Once I made the boys stand forehead to forehead and had them repeat statements to one another that I dictated like, “I love you, brother!” and “You are my best friend!” and “I want to be kind and compassionate toward you!”

This brought about all kinds of giggling and the tensions from arguing quickly dissolved.

“Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9

One of the Lord’s commands for Christians is to be peacemakers in this world.  In a world of prejudices, violence, greed, crime, etc. what does this mean?

A peacemaker is someone who seeks ways to love others – not stir up trouble.  We should be so filled with His peace – so satisfied by it – that we have no need to pick fights or be ‘right’ or get our way at the expense of others.

I will occasionally interrupt any escalating situations between brothers by asking, “Who is being a peacemaker?”

Sometimes we have to gently remind Mr. B. about being a peacemaker when we are driving home in rush hour traffic – hahaha!

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31

Ahhh, the Golden Rule!

I will often ask my boys when I see them being hurtful toward one another, “How would you feel if your brother came in and knocked down a Lego tower that you had worked very hard on?” or “How would it make you feel if your brother pushed you out of the way to get to the toilet first?”

Getting your child to consider how their sibling is feeling about their behavior toward them encourages empathy and is a great step toward building strong sibling relationships.

“But the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” Matthew 20:28

Ultimately, we are not here to please ourselves.  God gave each of us the special mission to serve others and He gave us the best example in His Son, Jesus.

The other morning Happy Buddy woke up before his brother.  He poured himself a bowl of cereal and then went back to the cabinet for another bowl.  I asked him what he was doing and he said he wanted to pour his brother a bowl of cereal so that it would be ready for him when he got up. <3

Don’t give up, sweet mama.  I know you sometimes feel like no one is GETTING IT, but keep being faithful.  Keep administering His Word.  Keep seeking Jesus on behalf of your kiddos.

And when the moments of fruit-filled responses come (like the cereal bowl story), shout joyfully,

“BEHOLD! How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

🙂

What do you think?  What verses does YOUR family use to encourage kindness among siblings?

    Hi, Julie!
All of the verses and insights you shared are wonderful! I also love John 14:15 for little ones!
A wise man named Boyd K. Packer once said, “True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior. The study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior.” Understanding the teachings of Christ will not only influence our children’s behavior now, but will bless them throughout their entire lives. Teaching them to use the word of God to guide their choices is one of the greatest gifts we can give them!
Thanks so much for all that you do! Have a blessed and happy Friday!

Thank you for encouraging me and reminding me of all the amazing verses our Lord has given us in His Word.
I especially LOVE the ‘forehead to forehead’ activity…my boys will love this because I know that we’re going to use this VERY soon…lol!
I am embarressed to admit that instead of asking who’s being a peacemaker, I tell them they are being a troublemaker :(. (Perhaps it’s me??? 😉 )

  • Things I’ve learned from breaking my tailbone >>

1. It is possible to wear only 4 outfits in 2 weeks.

2. God is more concerned with developing character and deep roots than about our physical comfort.

3. My children don’t love to see me bedridden, but they love that they have been able to eat nuggets, pizza, and fries for 2 weeks.

4. When you can’t sleep because of pain or wild imagination that is not helpful, put on worship music.

5. A good prayer to pray, “Show me the depth of my need for You and shatter my self-sufficiency. Change my mindset so that prayer becomes my first response in every situation. May I seek You in all things. Help me to put all my hope in You...”

6. Hold on to a sense of humor. Or find someone to get you laughing. Even though it will hurt to laugh. You need to not take it all so seriously!

7. God’s people are so precious. People showed up on our doorstep with lasagnas, flowers, sandwiches, Uber Eats gift cards, and one dear soul even sent her cleaning ladies to our house to undo the damage of mama being down for days on end. Whenever I was tempted to despair, someone would text or bring by some freshly cut fruit. The message here is don’t ask, just do > because every act of kindness reminded me of Who is in charge.

8. When hard times come, lean into gratitude instead of fussiness and resistance. Thank your husband for carrying everything while you’re down, thank your community for carrying you to Jesus, thank the Lord for being present in all circumstances with a plan for your good and His glory. There is a reason God tells us in the Bible to do all things without complaining or disputing-so that you. will. shine. It’s not easy, but the reward is GREAT. I want the world to see Jesus shining in me in my adversity. Doesn’t mean you can’t cry and admit that what you are facing is so very difficult, but this can be done with a surrendered heart. This is the new assignment. Accept it, receive it as something that is from a loving Father. Look for the provisions along the way. You will go from strength to strength. Move forward with hope. He’s got you!

  • ✨When we wake up, it will be Christmas!✨

I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to bake a cake for a family very dear to us. I went to the store, bought the ingredients, and carefully followed the recipe. The recipe said multiple times not to overcook the cake because it will very easily become dry. So I watched the oven diligently. But when I pulled the cake out, I could tell it had baked a little too long.

God called me to bake this cake for this family. It wasn’t time to quit, but it wasn’t time to make another cake! So instead of getting discouraged, I chose to pray about it. I asked the Lord to take my offering and make much of it. If He can multiply the loaves and fish, He can moisten up a cake!

Precisely one day after delivering the cake, we received a text stating what I thought was impossible. The cake was good! Delicious even!

Seems silly to pray about an overcooked cake, but I believe God is honored in these small acts of faith. Believing in the impossible was something God asked Mary to do, so why not trust Him to do the impossible here, too?

What impossible thing can we bring to Him in prayer today? He loves to hear from us. He loves to delight and surprise us when we choose to believe He is good and powerful and kind. He is no magic genie, but I think when our desires align with His heart, when obedience is the priority, and we are fully surrendered come what may, we can trust He will do a good thing.

“For nothing is impossible with God!” Luke 1:37

“He satisfies the hungry with good things.” Luke 1:53

Sleep tight, friends!

Galatians 5:13 says, “For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.”

The Lord gave us some helpful instructions on freedom and we are very much in need of them! May we set our gaze not on division and fighting, but on asking God how we can be a part of the solution - small, faithful acts of Spirit-led love every day to the people in our world.

It is here in America where we can freely and confidently respond to Zion’s request to gather as a family in the living room to pray for the leg pains he has been having. We can bake muffins in our kitchens, leave surprises at someone’s doorstep, share a Bible verse with the grocery store employee, and worship on Sunday with friends.

These freedoms were purchased at a great cost, as many chose to lay down their lives in an ultimate act of love. May we remember. And may that remembering lead us right back to Galatians 5:13 and Jesus’ ultimate act of love. This holy inspiration is what we need to rise each day in humble gratitude for freedom in Christ to pour out, serve, and build His kingdom here on earth!

Happy Birthday America! 🥳

All is calm and all is bright! And even the toilets aren’t so bad! 🥲
Mom and Dad are here and now it’s officially Christmas! ❤️🎄❤️

I haven’t opened our home to host anything since 4 years ago when we got a dog and I lost complete control of the house. Also because this is a house of boys and the bathroom permanently smells like an outhouse and I’m a little self conscious about all of it. 🫠

✨When we wake up, it will be Christmas!✨

❤️🤍💙Favorite day!💙🤍❤️
