At the school where I teach we celebrate the color brown in the month of November – which ties in nicely with Thanksgiving.
Here are my favorite ways to teach about brown…
Brown Discovery Bin
I always have a color discovery basket whenever we begin a new color. The kids love dumping the contents out and playing with all of the random bits.
Painting with Cocoa
I printed out THIS COLORING PAGE and had the kids paint the teddy bear brown using cocoa powder mixed with a little water. This smells so good!
Coffee Grinds
We poured a bunch of coffee grinds into a bowl and let the kids go for it. It was a TOTAL MESS but REALLY FUN and absolutely wonderful smelling.
Magic Brown Milk
We magically transformed plain white milk into BROWN milk! YUM!
Brown Books
We colored and glued brown things into our brown books.
Brown Turkey Crafts
We did a variety of turkey crafts for Thanksgiving. This one is my favorite – they are so goofy looking. You can find my other turkey crafts HERE.
Color Brown Poem
Our main bulletin board is always set with the color of the month crayon, the color poem and the coordinating image of the color animal from the story Brown Bear – which we read all year long.
Brown Bear Handprint
We make our brown bear handprints for our special end of the year Brown Bear Keepsake Book.
Three Brown Bears Poem
We learn a super cute poem about 3 brown bears and I bring in 3 of Happy Buddy’s bears to help me share it.
Here is the poem (to the tune of Three Blind Mice)…
Three brown bears.
Three brown bears.
See all their beds.
See all their chairs.
The mama cooked in a big black pot.
The papa bear’s porridge was much too hot!
The baby bear always cried a lot.
Three Brown Bears.
Three Brown Bears.
I found the poem HERE and used printed pictures of beds, chairs, and a black pot along with the 3 stuffed bears.
Chocolate Pudding Play
We made some chocolate pudding and let the kids play in it.
Chocolate Playdough
We made chocolate playdough as a class – get the easy recipe HERE – and then the kids rolled it into balls and poked some feathers in to make playdough turkeys.
Color Brown Videos on YouTube
(As always, be careful when showing videos to your class – sometimes the commercials shown before the video are not kid-friendly!)

Brown Books
Due to the large amount of chocolate activities, many of my students said that brown was their favorite color. 😉
I hope you found some great ideas here to help your kids have fun learning about the color brown!
Joyfully,
Julie 🙂
