I wanted to share with you a project that the Happy Hubby and I worked on back when we first moved into our Happy Home.
Our Guest Room Renovation!
When we bought the house, the guest room was used as a nursery for the previous owners’ (who just happened to by the Happy Hubby’s sister!) baby girl.
The Happy Hubby and I did not have a Happy Buddy of our own yet, so we planned to use the room as a guest room.
I love love love black and white toile and really wanted to create a room based on this French pattern.
The only challenge I had was to transform the room for under $200.
As I was flipping through the pages of this book –
I found my inspiration!!!
Neon green walls.
Sound crazy???
Yes, indeed, it was a little nuts.
And I have to admit that when I first painted the walls I burst into tears because it looked like Slimer from the movie Ghostbusters had puked all over the place! But once we got all the furniture and accessories in, it quickly became one of my favorite rooms in the house!
Here’s how it turned out…
The headboard on the bed was an antique from my great uncle! We spray painted it black.
The bedding, curtain, and pillows were on Ebay for about $150 (my largest expense).
The side table was a birthday gift from my Mother-in-Love – she got it super cheap at Homegoods.
I had seen an idea in Southern Living magazine a few years ago about using ribbon to decorate rooms. I bought a couple of spools of black ribbon ($4) and hot glued them around the window and around the top of the ceiling to give it a finished look. I have always dreamed of living in a home with crown molding, but since we couldn’t afford it, the ribbon really gave a great effect!!
The picture on the wall was a total gem I snatched up at Ross for $24.
Aren’t you loving those green walls??
Not exactly a restful room…
Our guests always told us that the walls would glow in the dark and it was hard to go to sleep in there. 🙂
My FAVE thing about the room is that dresser! Would you believe that someone was throwing that away?!?! The Happy Hubby grabbed it, brought it home, sanded it down and gave it a nice coat of black paint.
That mirror was also something we picked out of someone’s trash! A coat of black paint (it was originally a mint green color) really made it stunning!
The lamps were a gift from my mom that were also found at Homegoods.
P.S. Excuse the ugly fan – I blow-dried my hair in that room so as not to wake the Happy Hubby in our room every morning and I would get so hot!
I bought some simple black frames from Wal-Mart and filled them with family photos.
I’m also a HUGE fan of decorating with plates – I may do a post one day about all the many ways I have incorporated plates into our Happy Home’s decor. I literally have at least 5 plates in every room.
Those plates were given to me by a gal in my dad’s church choir who was cleaning out her cupboards!!
There’s a little peak from the room into the hallway and the bathroom across the way.
I think plate stands are also a highly effective decorating tool!
The long white plate on the dresser is where I put all of my jewelry. I loved that I could just toss my jewelry on there and it looked cute!
Miss it??
Well, when we got pregnant 3 years later (HOORAY!), we decided to transform that room back into a nursery for the Happy Buddy.
Would you like to see pics of what we did and know how many coats of paint it took to cover all that green goodness? 🙂
Leave a comment and let me know!
Happy Guest Room Decorate-ing!
And in case you would like to get ‘slimed’… The paint color is called Citrus Green from Benjamin Moore. 🙂

I love the color. You got a great deal on the black toile bedding. I bought my set at the “Great Indoors”. The whole set cost about $700. Not including the window treatments. I wished I’d seen it on ebay. You scored big.

I wanna see the nursery! I always find it inspiring to see what other people have done and what appeals to them. I remember painting my room BRIGHT yellow when I was in high school. Like, sunglasses were needed to be in this room. We ended up toning it down with a pale yellow and a textured roller which made it look like pale cream colored lace on the walls.
I have never decorated with plates! Could you do a post about that? I have two toddler boys and would be worried about how to hang them on the wall so they wouldn’t fall/get knocked off and break. Painting for me is the easy part of decorating – it’s everything else I have trouble with :S

I love this room…you did a great job! And I definitely want to see the nursery. We used toile in my daughter’s nursery too.

I painted the living room in our first house two shades of a very similar green. And yes, it did, at first, look like it would glow in the dark. Ha! I love how your guest room came together! Please show us how you transformed it into a nursery : )

I’d love to see what the room looks like now! It certainly was beautiful as a guest room! And I’d also love to read your ideas for decorating with plates!!!
Victoria
I would love to see the nursery, too! And I love the idea of decorating with plates.

Definately would love to see how the room looks now. You are so gifted in decor! You are incredibly inspiring me to think of ways on how to decorate our new place this summer:)
