Dear 8-Year-Old Me

20 Jun

The Happy Hubby texted me one morning last week saying that his fave morning show was asking listeners to answer the following question:

If you could make a 1 minute phone call to yourself at any age, when would it be and what would you say?

The hubs asked me how I’d respond.

At first, I thought about all the serious things I could say.  Like don’t go out with that guy when you are in middle school or stop worrying about what other people think.

But there was one overarching, super important message I felt I needed to communicate to the younger version of myself.

I texted him back.

I’d call 8-year-old me and say…

BANGS ARE A BAD IDEA.

:-)

What would you say???

I think you and I had the same hair and glasses…what were our mothers thinking?!

I would call 17yo me. I’d say, “Write down a list of the things you strongly believe in and want for your future and decide to do them, no matter what.” I’d like to kick 18-20yo Me’s butt.

Oh, dear….I really tried not to giggle! :-) I would say “NOOOO!!” to my 10 year old self to getting my beautiful long hair chopped off!! Horrible!!! I’ve never had it that short again! :-) Thank you for being so brave to share this photo with us! Love you, Julie!! :-)

I’d say, listen to your mother. She’s right!

Your bangs didn’t look nearly as bad as my shag haircut, but I picked that one myself (in third grade) and was thrilled with it at the time. Live and learn.

I laughed out loud – thanks for the chuckle!!

I liked my first thick plastic glasses because they were pink!! Of course, I got wire rimmed frames as so as they came out.
Interesting question, because I did the same thing backward when I was 7. I used to imagine an older me (I think the oldest I could picture was about 13) coming to tell me if I would ever outgrow bed-wetting. It helped to imagine it, but I remember worrying if any one would want to marry someone who still needed a plastic mattress cover…
I’d love to go back to that little girl and tell her not to worry, it wouldn’t be a problem, and stop procrastinating on my school work!

Ok, I have to admit my heart rejoiced to see that picture of you. Even with the Bangs going on (you know what I mean) you are clearly still the cutest girl ever!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great question! (LOVE your picture! Gorgeous hair, seriously!)

I’d call my 27 year-old self and tell her that joy is around the corner, that she will be a mother. :-)

On a MUCH lighter note, I’d tell my 18 year-old self to hang on to her cheerleading uniform; she should use it as a measuring stick!

I had to do a double take at this picture. It looks so much like a picture of my daughter taken around when she was about 10. She was born in 1986, so I’d imagine you are fairly close in age. You both had the same hair and glasses style thing going for sure. lol

Giggles, I am sure that even with bangs, you were still Happy and glittery, a shining star.

Besides all the obvious, serious stuff…I’d tell my 12 year old self that you should NEVER have super short spiked hair or wear red, white, and blue striped eye-shadow or glasses that had clear rims and bright red legs! You certainly shouldn’t wear all that at once! Especially with primary colored geometric shapes all over bright white clothes. I’d also say that if you saw it on MTV (in the 80′s) don’t do it or wear it!!!

This is why I like you! You are so funny!!!
